Apartments are the backbone of the Portuguese rental market, especially in Lisbon, Porto and other urban centres. Listings use the Portuguese typology system, which counts bedrooms rather than total rooms:
- T0 — studio (no separate bedroom)
- T1 — one bedroom
- T2 — two bedrooms
- T3 — three bedrooms, and so on
City-centre apartments command the highest rents and move fastest. Looking slightly outside the core — or one transport stop further out — often brings a noticeable saving for similar space. Many apartments are offered furnished, which is convenient when you're relocating from abroad.
Practical tips
Check the floor and whether there's a lift (older buildings often have neither), ask about natural light and noise, and confirm the monthly condominium fee if it isn't included. As always you'll need a NIF, ID and proof of income, plus a deposit — see the renting overview.
