Renting a house (moradia) appeals to families and anyone wanting more space, a garden or a quieter setting. Houses are easier to find — and more affordable — outside the dense centres of Lisbon and Porto, in suburbs, smaller towns and rural areas, as well as along the coast.
In the cities, freestanding houses are scarce and expensive; you'll see far more apartments. Head to the Algarve, the Silver Coast or the Alentejo and houses with outdoor space become realistic, sometimes for less than a city-centre apartment.
What to check before signing
- Heating and insulation — many Portuguese houses are built for summer; winters can feel cold and damp, so ask how the property is heated.
- Energy certificate — legally required for rentals and a good guide to running costs.
- Condition and inventory — photograph everything and attach a signed inventory to the lease.
- Who pays what — confirm responsibility for water, electricity, gas, internet and any community fees.
Rents vary enormously by region, so use our cost of renting guide to set expectations, and read the renting overview for the documents and deposits you'll need. Prefer city living? See apartments for rent.
